Air Force Recap aka I did it!

Can you say busy?  PT x3 week, 2 boys x2 soccer games a week, attempting to spin1-2x week, work x5, oh, and we found a house we want to get...so add in realtor, etc = blog failing to get updated.

So I'll give you my update in picture format.

"Run as tolerated"

Shout out to my running partner who got 2nd in her age group!

I have to explain, the dips are my walk breaks which get farther apart as I go!

No pain after!Shocking, I know, for me too! I was expecting some at least.

So, after 2 PT sessions this week, they've let me go! I'm going to be taking it easy since my IT bands are tight this week, but hoping that the foam roller will help out.  So from ankle surgery to half marathon 12 weeks and 1 day.

Now....for that Flying Pig Marathon in May...

Looking back, planning forward

Last year around this time I was setting some goals for myself.  Here they are:  Goals for 2012

This is what I was able to do:

My original running goals for the coming year were:

  • √Run 5k under 21:40 Ran 21:13 in March 5k
  • Run the Flying Pig Half Marathon or the Cap City Half  in under 1:45 managed 1:51 (holy hills!)
  • Run the Air Force 10k or Half in under 46:00/ under 1:45Ran Full marathon instead!
  • Run the Columbus Half Marathon in under 1:45  wanted to run this...next year...

My realistic goals for 2012:
  • √Run/Finish a 5k by March
  • Run/Finish the Flying Pig 10k in May
  • Run/Finish the AF 10k in a "decent" time
  • Finish Columbus Half
My more realistic goals for 2012:
  • Increase flexibility in calves so they are at least 10 degrees
  • √Walk a full day without any heel pain
  • √Start running again
  • Strength training and core
  • √Spinning- don't go under 11 for resistance- bike at least 20 miles per class

So what are my plans for 2013?

  • Run 13 13.1s in 2013
    • I haven't fully committed to this since as of today, I still am working on my IT band issues.  But the year is long, and who knows? Last year I never would have imagined I would run 2 full marathons in 2012.
  • Run Cincinnati's Flying Pig 3 way- I've already signed up and this will be my "A" race for the spring.  5k and 10k on Saturday, 1/2 marathon on Sunday.  This is more of a challenge in training.  I'm looking forward to track workouts and speed training.
  • Run Air Force 1/2 marathon in 1:45
  • Run Columbus Full or Half in under 4:16/1:42 We'll see about the full...
  • Run at least 5 ORRRC races and at least 2 with the boys.
  • Try to run with Up and Running at least 2 times a month

Road Trip!

Family reunion time! sort of.  Heading to Akron to visit my mom and stepdad, but it works out that my brother is going to be in town from Utah, and my dad will be in town from Arizona.  Can't wait to see everyone together.

I'm hoping the drive there will be uneventful, but I'm going to have 3 very tired boys in the car.  My dh and cub have been doing cub scout camp all week, and last night cub's friend spent the night (also a cub scout).  They got up at 6 this morning and after swimming and sun I'm sure cub's going to be a bear (forgive the pun!) later.  Also, Buster has been going to baseball day camp (although only half days) he too got up early.  Now add my dh who will be exhausted from being in charge of the pack this week, I'm hoping we'll get through the drive without too many issues.  I'm seeing the portable DVD players being busted out in the near future.

I'm also running the inaugural Canton Marathon well, the half, on Sunday.  The temps look a little warm, low for Sunday is 67.  Start time is 6am. I'm sure it won't be a problem since I should be done in 2 hrs, but they are already offering deferrals until next year for the Full marathon runners.  I wondered when I saw the Canton Marathon booth at the Flying Pig expo that it would be too warm for a June marathon in Ohio. Then I went and signed up for it. Ha.  Just must remember that it's a training run.  I'm going to go on feel, since there is no point in stressing about pace.  It's going to be hot, humid and it's not what I've been training for, so just a nice training run with a tshirt/finishers medal.

I think they are hoping to be packed too!

Pig training and zoo visit!

Training since last week ummm March 19th:
3/20- attempted a tempo run in 80 degree weather...not fun, when you're not used to it! 2.5 miles at 7:40 pace
3/21- 3.1 miles on the treadmill
3/22- running clinic- plyos, strength training, stretching
3/23- 3 miles in the neighborhood
3/24- Spinning class
3/25- 9 mile trail run with Carrie *No heel bruised feeling*  Yay!

3/26- Spinning
3/27-Tempo run at soccer practice- I love that there is bike path right next to the soccer field that goes around the park for a nice 1.15 mile loop. 3.5 miles overall Yes, I'm one of those moms.
3/28- running clinic- plyos,sprints/working on form, etc
3/29- run 1.5 as warmup, spinning class
3/30- rest day
3/21- rest day
4/1- Longest run in a long time 10.3 miles!!!!!! No problems with my heel again!  (fingers crossed)

4/2- Spinning
4/3-30 min tempo run 4 miles. done.

So, I've decided that I'm doing Air Force Half Marathon on Sept. 15th.  I had been debating between the 10k and the half.  I got 3rd place in my age group last year in the 10k so I was debating how to train (more speedwork) and still get mileage in for Columbus full or half.   Then the 10k sold out...so the choice was made for me.

That's ok...now it's Columbus Full or Half.  I think, if I'm not forced into committing too early- I'm going to see how the Flying Pig Half goes.  I'm hoping to do as well as I did in Columbus  1hr 49min 07 sec.  But....there are hills and I've not lifted or done much speed work this time around.  So, those are my excuses when I don't make it, ok?
My dad w/Buster.  Gee, wonder what my dad looked like as a boy?

Meanwhile, the real reason I haven't blogged in awhile.  It's been Spring Break and we've had visitors!  My kids have had 2 sets of grandparents visit them this week.  Which has been nice, but there is the stress of having guests (clean, clean, clean) and we don't have a lot of space to visit chez nous.    We managed some how.

Cub with his sheepish smile and a Mexican gray wolf @Cincinnati zoo
We ended up heading to the zoo (actually between grandparent visits).  I hadn't been to the Cincinnati zoo in a long time (in kid years- at least 2 maybe 3 years ago).  Wow! It looks fantastic! And what a difference a few years make, no stroller, potty issues, temper tantrums, etc.  It was just a great time for the boys and for myself. DH had to work. :-(
Cub has been doing research in school on wolves and (thank goodness) the zoo had Mexican wolves for us to see.  He was so excited.
My favorite picture of the boys at the zoo

There's a penguin in there somewhere

Random 6

1.  Training this week (or since last post)
Last Sunday-tried to go out for a 7 miler run after my 5k the day before- failed- got 2 in before my left heel felt bruised again.  It seems I can't run 3 days in a row...grumble.
Monday- Spinning
Tuesday- 6.2 miles in the heat! 80 degrees in Ohio in March?
Wednesday- 3 mile trail run (hoping for a cool shady trail run- but oops, leaves haven't budded yet! Hot and tired.  I had my running clinic that pm too.  More about that later...
Thursday- Spinning class
Friday- rest day= pizza & beer and watching the Ohio University Bobcats basketball team!  Go OU!
Saturday- 3 miles easy
Sunday-7.65 miles (heel started bugging me at 5)  This is so seriously annoying.  I'm going to have to stick my Dr. Scholl's heel pads on top of my orthotics- seriously how much stuff can you pile into a shoe and still have room for your feet?

2. Decisions, decisions-  Air Force 10k or Air Force 1/2 marathon?  Columbus 1/2 or Full?  My time for my Columbus half qualifies me for preferred starting position/seeded at the Air Force Half.  Which is way cool! (and shhhh, I'm not even that fast) So I'm leaning towards the AF half in September and Columbus Full in October.

3.  How long should I wait to register?  Both AF and Columbus have cut off price changes on March 31. I'm paranoid about the heel...will I be ok?

4.  Should I submit an entry into the Nuun's Hood to Coast Relay TeamIt would be so cool...but out of my comfort zone...

5.  Go BOBCATS!  Nothing like Ohio University making it to the Sweet 16!
6. Anyone train for a half then turn around and do a full the next month?
